2) About us
This probably reads like an immigration officer’s nightmare. My parents are Hungarian, who escaped the Goulash-Communism in 1965, I did the trip to Germany in my mother’s womb, grew up and went to school in Munich. I came to Namibia in 1995 and am a permanent resident since 1997. My wife, Doris, was born in Austria, grew up and went to school in South Africa and came to Namibia in 1993, where we met in 1998 (on a blind date, mind you) and got married in 2005. The trigger for getting married was the birth of Maximilian, the older one of two boys, pursued by Felix 13 months later. Theoretically, the boys are Namibians of South African/Austrian and German/Hungarian descent with Australian permanent residence (Doris and I received that status in 1993).
Tommy:
Renaissance soul and straight shooter, from pastry cook to plumber, via vehicle- and textile-import (USA to Germany) to alternative energies in Namibia, then commercial pilot with three ATPLs (Airline Transport Pilot License) and currently running a long and well established web development company in Namibia, owned and founded by himself.
Likes: Photography (Arnold Newman, Eve Arnold, Ansel Adams), cooking and food (anything), reading (Ayn Rand, Robert Heinlein, King, Koontz, Deaver), movies (Coen Brothers, Tarantino, Jim Jarmush, Martin Scorsese, Sergio Leone, Luc Besson and many more)
travelling (Africa, Caribbean, Southern Europe), music (Dr. John, Robert Rodriguez, Pink Martini and everything else really), the outdoors (any desert, any water - huh?), trees (any) and last but not least anything with an engine
Dislikes: Bad taste, big mouths, lies, cheats, small talk, early mornings, empty promises, the news, Robert Mugabe, noise, French folks who refuse to speak anything else than French (no matter where they are), the fact that I simply can’t give up smoking.
Doris (from here on forward): The second-oldest of four siblings, imigrated from Austria to South Africa at age 4; first to Durban and Stanger (Kwazulu Natal) and then Benoni (yes, where Charlize Theon is from, and no, I don’t know her). Alas, although both my parents and brothers are in the hospitality industry, I am woefully ignorant in the kitchen and can only semi-successfully pull-off three dishes (creamed spinach, chicken schnitzel, banana bread), which compliments Tommy perfectly; he likes to cook, I like to eat.
Matriculated from Benoni High in 1989, studied Communication Science at what is now the University of Johannesburg and, after coming to the bizarre conclusion that there were about two hours a day I couldn’t account for sensibly at the time, decided to fill those with the continued pursuit of academia and graduated witha Master of Business Leadership from Unisa in 2003. Career includes newsreader at a Namibian radio station, shore skipper at a fishing company in Walvis Bay, part-time voice-overs and programme manager at a Namibian NGO in the filed of civic education for 12 years before deciding to procreate and joining Tommy in the web development industry.
Currently in denial about my excess adipose tissue (the if-I-can’t-see-my-butt-is-it-really-there?syndrome)
Likes: Shortcuts, good food, good company, good books, good music, sunflowers, horse-riding, procrastinating, waking up and realising it’s Saturday when you actually think it’s a work day.
Dislikes: The combination of fruit and chocolate, prententiousness, dishonesty, hidden agendas, materialism, being told what to do, suburban mediocrity, R&B, the fact that my underarms keep on waving long after I’m done.
Maximilian: Our wiry three-year old. If there’s water, he’ll find it, if there’s sand to mix with it, all the better.
Likes: Eggs, Haribos, Winnie the Pooh, Spiderman, anything with wheels, lego, drawing (on walls in particular).
Dislikes: Bedtime (very inventive in terms of reasons why he shouldn’t be in bed), mornings (just like his dad).
Felix: Tenacious two-year old, stubborn to the point of distraction. If his brother finds water, he’ll find a receptacle to tip it out in and/or the sand to mix it with.
Likes: Haribos, muesli, “dicke Waldemar” (pig in a German kids book), whacking
his brother over the head with any solid toy, anything with wheels.
Dislikes: Eggs, washing hair, being told what to do and how to do it (just like his mother).
Pets: Lea, our trusty 9-year old German Shepherd; Joe, the SPCA delinquent; Sushi, the Siamese Fighter Fish; HugBug, the catfish (bottom-feeder).
Vehicles: Apart from Wohni, Chrysler Grand Voyager, Vespa 250GTV, 1948 Opel Kapitän
That’s a wrap, all the best,
Tommy, Doris, Maxi, Felix
